When you see something, Say Something. If that means a whistleblower call to the State Department of Health, so be it. When you look at Kermit Gosnell's Woman's Medical Society in Philadelphia (and setting aside the top four counts in his conviction), many of the counts dealt with unsanitary conditions, including a catbox in one of the surgical rooms. What's more, these went as far back as 1979, meaning dozens of employees over the years witnessed these conditions… And nobody dropped a dime. When you have an AuD intern ask you this question, answer them with a question: Could you look yourself in the mirror if a patient actually died due to an infection triggered by the conditions?

thanks for taking the time to access by blog and to read what Jerry Northern posted; very inspirational and motivating for me as well and I am glad that it was a good read for you. I know that I am rethinking my contributions and figuring out what I can do to move the profession forward in terms of leading rather than following technology. Giddy up as they say!

A very refreshing call-to-action for those of us just starting down the Audiology path. As a current Social Media Director of brands in the fitness industry, and an aspiring Audiologist, I’m thrilled by the demands for students to be more creative and innovative. Too many professionals are comfortable with their routine, or simply keeping up with technology, but it is time for the Audiologists to be at the front lines of innovation and technology….or risk being left in the dust.

Hey Dave…thanks for your response to my blog. And, you are right: the 3-D additive printing process to formulate a new ear (or other body parts) is absolutely remarkable! Indeed, the future is here….and we just need to get our creative juices going to make the most of the opportunities that are out there to increase and improve our current standard of care in hearing healthcare.

Hey Jerry,

I worked for A.U. the past few summers and initially helped her put this blog together (then she took it to heights I never imagined). Your guest post here is awesome and exactly what A.U. intended this blog to be used for.

I think that technology and the exponential change that is associated with it can be uncomfortable but, as you mentioned, some of these changes can offer huge improvements for many people. Being a “digital native”, I have grown up through a more dramatic series of shifts in technology than previous generations – this is obvious as it corresponds with Moore’s Law. Therefore, I am less prone to dismiss these type of potential breakthroughs.

Let’s take hearing loss for instance. Today we have hearing aids that are so discreet you can barely notice they are there (not to mention way cheaper!). There are more smartphones on the planet than humans and these phones are getting smarter and smarter – there’s no telling what solutions might arise from our mini-super computers we carry in our pocket.
